One upside of the dorms

As I get ready to say goodbye (Sayonara, Bon Voyage, Adios, Ariva Dirche, Ciao, Auf Wiedersehen) to the dorms, I would like to commemorate and credit my black friends next door for influencing my ever-expanding ebonic lexicon. Here are a few terms I have come to learn from my converse with Brionna and Threasa:

1.) Home trainin [hohm-trey-nin’] – showing respect to someone else's personal space or property.
                         Synonyms: manners, etiquette, class.
Ex: "I can’t believe she ate my last Oreo. Where’s her home training?"

2.)Ratchet- all bad, looking/acting/doing dirty things
Ex: "I woke up late for class and had to go looking all ratchet."

3.) Getting chose- gaining attention, often times leading to being asked on a date.
Ex: "Dang girlfriend, you're looking good tonight. You're totally                            gun get chose."

4.) Triffling- unexcused, disgusting, things that should not be done
Ex: "I stalked her Facebook and saw she wore glasses to prom.                             That girl is triffling."

5.) The business-[biz-nis], (sometimes also pronounced [biz-nass] when emphasizing excitement)- a way to refer to something that has got it going on
Synonyms: awesome, great, high quality
Ex: "That fried chicken with barbecue sauce was the business."

6.) Out the house- a status that should or should not be obtained depending on appearance
Ex: "He's average looking. But, you can definitely take him out the house."

7.) Jank- broken, ruined, used, substandard quality, sketchy, questionable
Ex: "I got soaked walking to class because of this jank umbrella."

8.)Peac(-ing, -ed out)-  the act of leaving, usually abruptly or unannounced
Ex: "We're probably peacing pretty soon. This party is lame."

9.) Crawling- unsanitary, filthy, dirty, gross
Ex: "I can't believe she leaves her toothpaste in here without                             the cap on. This bathroom is crawling."

Also, they sleep in these pretty silk head wraps because cotton pillowcases are bad for their weaves.  These cool looking "wrap caps" to keep their hurr looking fresh.

This Weekend I...

Got an Easter basket in the mail from my mama!
Jelly Belly jelly beans, cheddar bunny crackers, marshmallow Peeps, Captiva cookies, Swedish cinnamon thins, tie dye socks, a wind up turtle and canned salmon!

Then Friday night I was awakened from a very deep sleep by the girls on my floor having a freakout party because of the weather.  So we all sat in the hallway until the tornado sirens went off.  Michelle cried. Lindsay tweeted her every move.
Needless to say nothing happened.  Tornado warnings are kind of like the boy who cried wolf.

Then Saturday I went to the Farmers Market

And the antique store across the street

I bought this vintage photo album for $3 :)

Then I got a free henna tattoo at Northwest Fest

Happy Earf Day!

Yesterday Jory and I kicked off Earth Day by joining a group of volunteers at Lake Griffy for a nature clean up.  We got these kick ass canoes and we were off like Louis and Clark.

<--This is a dinosaur egg we discovered.

We kept finding these red and white bobbers

And since they look so much like Pokaballs we played Pokemon!

GOTTA CATCH EM ALL!

Then today I went to go get my mail and was met by an Earth Day party in Harper hosted by our RAs.
The deal was if you went outside and picked up trash for 10 minutes you got a free veggie burger, a cup of dirt pudding with gummy worms and a T-shirt.
DEALS ON WHEELS!!

This is me at Yosemite National Park in my new shirt and sunhat!

An Entire Day of Free Fun!

I woke up yesterday morning to a thunderstorm which I decided was an opportune time to get some studying done.  So I walked to the IMU with my umbrella and history homework.

As I was sitting on my favorite study couch, this friendly janitor poked his head out of the conference room down the hall and motioned me to come over.

He was cleaning up after a catered breakfast and told me to help myself to the left overs.  And since I rarely pass up free food when it is offered, we sat down and had ourselves some blueberry muffins and fresh fruit.

So Lester (my new janitor friend) and I sat at the fancy meeting table and enjoyed an unexpected breakfast feast.  Turns out, Lester is from East Chicago, has twin sisters and twin brothers and was himself born a twin but his brother died of crib death, went to IU in the 70s, and likes to say "get it girl!" and "um humm" (he is black btw.)

Being as he shared with me, I helped him clean the conference room which was actually really fun.

Then I went to Collins Fest.  Collins is the dorm where all the hipsters live.  They always have fun events like Nutella Fest, Urban Dictionary Spelling Bees, and Quidditch Tournaments.

Collins Fest had:

Tie Dyeing and a Moon Bounce

Live music by The Best Friends

Medieval Fencing and Make-Your-Own Chain Mail (?)

The CUTEST KID ON EARTH enjoying a free snow cone

Inflatable Animals that were thrown around during "Welcome to the Jungle"

An Ice Cream Trough which was really disguising and probably had Salmonella and a bacteria content of 100% floating around in it.

Then I went to see State Radio who was giving a free concert in the parking lot across the street from my dorm!

You can see the windows of my dorm behind the stage

Embraced My Inner Couch Potato

Lately I've been discovering some REALLY AWESOME movies, shows, and music.  Some of which include:

SUCHHH A GREAT MOVIE about finding happiness through simplicity.  And it's based on a true story of extreme adventurer, Christopher McCandless.

Is it possible for Disney to make a disappointing movie? Tangled was featured as IU's free movie and was packed with college students and elementary kids alike three nights in a row.
A documentary based on experimental art.  Say no more.

I knew Flight of the Conchords made hilarious songs but had no idea they had a show until last Tuesday.  If you're into awkward humor and New Zealand accents, this is for you!

Artists added to my iTunes:
Mumford and Sons

Fleet Foxes
Ray Lamontagne

Eddie Vedder
